Porcelain enameling is an ancient decorative technique that is highly durable and UV-resistant, making it ideal for permanence in the outdoors. The process involves fusing powdered glass mixed with pigmented minerals to a metal substrate at high heat. This class will introduce you to silk-screen printing on enameling steel. This is a rare opportunity to learn both a traditional printmaking technique as well as an established metal finishing method.
We'll start with a review of the history of enameling as well as printing. You'll get instruction on all of the facets relating to prepping the steel, enamel mixing and kiln management. Additionally, lessons in setting up screens, setting up the workspace, as well as pulling a print will be presented. The instructor will share past examples of his and others’ work to guide you to a successful project. This class is perfect for anyone with screen-printing experience who wants to learn an additional method suitable for public art applications as well as those who want to learn the basics of one of the most flexible print-making methods around.
