This course introduces the fundamentals of hand-forged hinge making, with a focus on traditional blacksmithing techniques. Designed for beginners and intermediate metalworkers, the class welcomes anyone interested in historical hardware, functional metal art, or expanding their forging skills. While no prior blacksmithing experience is required, basic familiarity with forge safety and hammer control will enhance the learning experience.

You'll learn to forge two to three styles of hinges, progressing from foundational to more advanced forms. The course begins with a simple Viking-style hinge to establish core techniques in shaping and punching. Next, you'll forge a hot-cut chisel, to use while creating a strap hinge with decorative finials. If you complete the primary projects and are up for another challenge, you can attempt a more complex knuckle-joint strap hinge incorporating both functional and ornamental elements.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Safely operate forging tools and equipment
  • Forge basic and intermediate hinge types
  • Produce and use a hot-cut chisel for decorative and structural work
  • Create functional joinery and decorative finials
  • Apply traditional blacksmithing techniques to future metalworking projects

$315 ($270 tuition + $45 materials)
Open to ages 18 and up.
