Join us for two-day intensive experience in decorative blacksmithing techniques. Rather than working towards a specific project, this class is all about experimentation and skill-building. The goal of this class is to learn new decorative metalworking methods while refining those you already know. On the first day, you’ll learn how to manipulate the ends of a rod of steel to turn it into virtually any shape. Then on day two, you’ll learn how to manipulate the length of the material to create several types of twists. Possible tips and twists we'll experiment with include: drawing a taper, snub end, upsetting, scrolling, fish tail, basic leaf, ball end, simple twist, rope, waterfall, pineapple, rubiks.

While learning the more traditional methods using hand tools, Becca will also offer tips and tricks using the advantages of power tools along the way to save you time and energy.   Leave the weekend inspired and with a new set of skills to apply to your future projects! This class is intended for those with some blacksmithing experience (at minimum, our one-day project shop class) so that have familiarity with forging, tools, and equipment.  |  $150 ($120 tuition + $30 materials)

Instructor: Becca Cerra works at the intersection of visual and performing arts, often combining elements of sculpture with contemporary dance and partner acrobatics to create a unique, hybrid art form. She uses steel because of the way its rigidity and coldness contrasts against the softness, fragility, and impermanence of the human body. She also works with metal because of the physicality it demands; the work becomes both of and for the body. She is currently experimenting with adapting the aesthetics of her fine art practice into functional and utilitarian objects to create unforgettable home goods and private commissions.
