In this weekend intensive, you'll practice blacksmithing skills including drawing out a taper, using a scrolling jig and center punch, drilling holes, and riveting, in the process of assembling a wall-mounted coat rack. You'll also learn decorative finishing techniques and have an opportunity to try several twisting techniques to create a set of three or more hooks. Your rack will start as a flat bar on which you can experiment with different decorative edge finishing and scrolling techniques. You'll attach your hooks with rivets to create a one-of-a-kind coat rack ready to hang on your wall!

This class is for both beginning and continuing level blacksmiths. All materials and tools are provided (you're welcome bring your own tools). Also bring a lunch and beverage - we'll take a break both days. | $165 ($130 tuition + $35 materials)

Instructor: Becca Cerra works at the intersection of visual and performing arts, often combining elements of sculpture with contemporary dance and partner acrobatics to create a unique, hybrid art form. She uses steel because of the way its rigidity and coldness contrasts against the softness, fragility, and impermanence of the human body. She also works with metal because of the physicality it demands; the work becomes both of and for the body. She is currently experimenting with adapting the aesthetics of her fine art practice into functional and utilitarian objects to create unforgettable home goods and private commissions.
